Why travel?
Travel has always been a passion, as long as I can remember. I have been fortunate to have lived in and visited some wonderful places over the years. Moving into the travel sector was an amazing opportunity for me to put all of that knowledge and experience to great use, planning holidays for clients. What’s not to like?!
What was your first trip abroad?
Majorca on a family holiday with my mum, grandma and grandad. It was 1970-something and I was about 5 or 6. I loved it, from the moment we stepped on the plane. I loved the weather, I loved that everyone was speaking a foreign language, I loved the hotel and beach, I loved the food and I loved that all ‘my’ grown ups were so relaxed and having such a great time. We flew back to Glasgow Abbotsinch two weeks later with the obligatory straw donkey and a life long addiction to travel was born!
What’s your favourite place to holiday?
This is a tricky one, and one that I am asked often. For a beach holiday I would definitely say Caribbean. For a city break … possibly Vienna but ask me again in six months. And for something completely different … I spent three weeks in Wyoming one summer on an incredible family holiday close to Yellowstone National Park. Tracking bear from horseback was one of the many highlights. For experiences, memories and wow factor – that one was hard to beat!
Where is top of your ‘where’s next’ list?
So many places to choose from … if I had to pick the absolute top of my bucket list, it would be a Silversea Antarctic Cruise. If I were choosing something less extreme I would go for Mauritius – I haven’t visited any of the Indian Ocean islands and Mauritius with its lush rainforest interior, French influenced cuisine and white sand beaches really appeals.
Your Top Travel Tip
Cheapest is not always best … don’t scrimp on things like room or cabin choice. If you’re travelling all the way to the Caribbean or Indian Ocean, pay a bit extra for a seaview room. If you’re cruising the Med or Caribbean, book a cabin with a balcony so that you can properly enjoy those stunning sunsets.
Mags specialises in holidays to North America and the Caribbean, Oceania, the Indian Ocean and cruises.
Why Travel?
My childhood was spent mostly living abroad and so I think I caught the travel bug from an early age. As an adult, my professional life enabled me to live and work in some incredible places and I never want to stop. I am so curious about the world, and I want to use my experience, energy and enthusiasm to help plan the most amazing holidays for our clients!
What was your first trip abroad?
My first trip abroad was to Germany, we moved there to live when I was around 5 years old. I think my most enduring memory was of Bratwurst, chips and curry sauce and hopping across to the Netherlands to the market in Venlo. My next home was in Hong Kong, a place that remains one of my absolute favourite destinations the sounds and smells, hustle and bustle have always stayed with me giving me a lifelong passion for the Far East…
What’s your favourite place to holiday?
There are so many places that I really love but I think for a longer holiday I would have to say Thailand, it has something for everyone, beautiful islands and beaches, an amazing culture, incredible food and elephants! For a city break Krakow around Christmas and the New Year stands out for me, it’s historically rich, really beautiful with lots of lovely affordable bars and restaurants to warm up in.
Where is top of your ‘where’s next’ list?
So many places to choose from but absolutely top of my list is New Zealand, amazing cities, incredible and diverse scenery, stunning nature, whale watching, penguins and also Hobbitses! Not to mention beautiful beaches, lakes, vineyards and cool cities. I shall be heading there very soon! Not far behind on the wish-list is Sri Lanka not just for the beaches but the history and culture, and more elephants!
Your Top Travel Tip
Holidays are times to make memories, recharge your batteries and to experience new cultures. It’s really easy to put pressure on yourself to try and do absolutely everything on the “must see and do” list. Try not to put pressure on yourself to cram everything in ending up overwhelmed, time pressured, tired and disappointed if you miss something. Plan in time to just sit and chill and to go with the flow. Sometimes this leads to more authentic experiences that you might not find in the guidebook…
Sue specialises in holidays to South East Asia, China and the Far East, central Europe, Malta and Cyprus.
