Tips for first time cruisers
Embarking on your first cruise can be both exhilarating and overwhelming. Here are some top tips to ensure you make the most of your experience:
Plan Ahead
Speak to your Travel Agent, ask them to research destinations and cruise lines to find the best fit for your interests and budget. Book early to secure the best rates and cabin options.
Pack Smart
Bring essentials like sunscreen, comfortable shoes, and a swimsuit. Formal nights may require dressier outfits. Pack a small carry-on with necessities for the first day, as your luggage may take time to be delivered to your cabin. And remember, if you are on a fly-cruise you're luggage allowance will be capped at the flight allowance (generally 23k, but ask your Travel Agent to confirm).
Pre-Book Onboard Activities
Specialty dining, and spa treatments can fill up quickly. Reserve these in advance through the cruise line’s website. Ask your Travel Agent to point you in the right direction.
Consider options for Shore Excursions
You can generally book these on your Cruise Line app as with restaurant bookings etc. The most popular excursions can fill up quickly (especially on the larger ships), so book early to avoid disappointment. This is another one to discuss with your Travel Agent who will be able to access independent shore excursions that may not be offered by your cruise line , they can also organise private tours and excursions if you want something more exclusive.
Check Documentation
Check with your Travel Agent re passport validity (different countries require different validities) and visa requirements. ENSURE THAT YOU HAVE CRUISE INSURANCE, this is a requirement for all cruise lines and if you are asked and can't evidence insurance you may be refused boarding.
Arrive Early
Always, always, always ... get to the embarkation port a day early to avoid travel delays and ensure a stress-free start to your cruise.
Get to Know the Ship Layout
Familiarize yourself with the ship’s layout using maps and apps; ask your Travel Agent where to find these if you are not sure. Knowing where key locations are will save you time and help you avoid getting lost.
Budget for Extras
While many amenities are included, some activities and services, such as alcohol, excursions, and specialty dining, are extra. Always budget for extras.
Attend the Muster Drill
This mandatory safety drill is crucial and will take place soon after you board. Pay attention to the instructions and know your emergency assembly point.
Stay Connected
Cruise ships offer Wi-Fi packages, but they can be pricey. Decide if you need constant connectivity or if you can unplug and enjoy the journey. Perhaps buy a wifi for one device and have everyone in the suite share?
Make the Most of the Onboard Activities
Take advantage of the ship’s amenities, from pools and shows to fitness centers and classes. Check the daily schedule delivered to your cabin for activities and events.
Tipping and Gratuities
Understand the tipping policy. Some cruise lines include gratuities in the fare, while others add them to your onboard account. Many people choose to leave a tip for their cabin steward, over and above the included gratuities.
Relax, have fun and embark on a memorable and enjoyable first cruise adventure. Let me know how you get on.
Bon voyage!
