Awesome Antigua

With its friendly, upbeat vibe and 365 white sand beaches, it’s little wonder Antigua is such a popular destination. The beaches really are just the beginning as Antigua has so much more to offer visitors. The island is small enough that you can explore it fully whilst here, taking in the stupendous views, visiting some of the many cultural and historical sites or even zip wiring over rainforest!

We love Antigua for it's friendly, upbeat vibe and exceptional restaurants. If you're a bit of a foodie, then Antigua could be the island for you!

What to see and do on Antigua

Places to stay

With so many wonderful hotels available we wanted to highlight some of our favourite places to stay.

Beach life

With a beach for every day of the year, you are spoilt for choice! The South Eastern coast is popular with surfers and body boarders, whilst the remainder of the island offers calmer seas, perfect for more relaxed beach days.

Activity

Step away from the beaches and Antigua is packed with activity for all ages; you could explore parts of the island on a guided hike, take a 4x4 safari or zip wire above the rainforest canopy. If retail therapy is more your thing, the capital St John's has lots of high-end, duty free shopping opportunities.

Historic Antigua

Once the most fortified island in the world, the remaining historic forts offer today’s visitors both a glimpse of Antigua’s turbulent Colonial history and panoramic views across the island and Caribbean sea.

Off island

Why not take a day (or two) to explore Barbuda? Antigua’s sister island is like a little piece of Caribbean heaven. Barbuda is a get-away-from-it-all kind of island, it was a favourite holiday destination for Princess Diana for that very reason. The beaches here are pink and white sand, they are truly breath-taking.  Don't miss the Frigate Bird Sanctuary, home to many tropical breeds and the largest population of frigate birds in the Western hemisphere.

Top Tip: Don’t miss Nelson’s Dockyard, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a visit here is an absolute must when you’re on Antigua.

Stretching across more than 15 square miles of Antigua’s south coastline, Nelson’s Dockyard National Park is the island’s centre for heritage, environment, and yachting.

The park (and dockyard) is named for Admiral Nelson who served in Antigua between 1784 and 1787 and you will be pleased to hear that  it’s a far cry these days from the “infernal hole” that Nelson described back in the day!

As well as the historic dockyard itself, the park takes in 12 miles of hiking trails, historic ruins, diverse ecosystems and stunning beaches.

Take a guided private tour of the dockyard, Shirley Heights and historic Clarence House where everyone from Churchill to the late Queen has dined.

Beyond the dockyard area, the park is a mix of dramatic coastline and steep hills and valleys including Sugar Loaf Mountain which reaches over 1,000 feet in elevation. This supports a wide range of trees, shrubs and plants including some of the rarest on the island.  This in turn makes the Park an ideal home for a variety of birds and wildlife. It all makes for excellent walks and hikes – don’t forget your camera!

Every year the waters off English Harbour play host to one of the world's premier sailing events with Antigua Sailing Week. On average 100 yachts take part with 1500 participants and around 5000 spectators, in 2019 twenty four countries were represented.

Sailing week is a heart-stopping spectacle with races taking place every day. The atmposphere around English Harbour is electrifying. There is a party atmosphere across the island, especially in and around English Harbour. Post-regatta celebrations go on well into the wee hours of the morning!

If you want to visit Antigua and be part of Sailing Week, it's best to book early. Accommodation fills up extremely quickly!  Future events are scheduled for:

2024  27th April – 3rd May
2025  26th April – 2nd May
2026  25th April– 1st May
2027  24th – 30th April
