Captivating Cuba!
Cuba is a destination like no other.
Whilst Cuba is growing in popularity as a tourist destination, visitor numbers are still low in comparison with other Caribbean islands. If you're adventurous at heart and want to leave your wifi connection at home then Cuba could be the perfect holiday island for you.
We love Old Havana with her faded colonial architecture and calypso beat, the clear blue seas of Varadero and taking a sunset drive in a pink open-top 1950s chevvy!

Beach Life
Cuba has some of the best beaches in the Caribbean, some of them still un-developed as tourist destinations.
Most tourists head to Varadero where the beaches are long, palm fringed and white sand, leading out to the azure blue ocean. Water sports are available, but not the same range that you would see on some of the other Caribbean islands. Varadero itself is a modern tourist town with lots of hotels, bars and restaurants. It is not typically Cuban!
There is good golfing at the oceanside Varadero Golf Club, some excellent restaurants in Vardero itself and great live music at a number of venues (we like The Beatles bar, no Calypso music here - but local rock bands playing covers of music from '70s - early 2000's).
Away from the beach
Varadero is close enough (an hour or so drive) from Havana that it's possible to take a day trip into the capital, if your holiday is based at Varadero. Alternatively, take a twin-based trip and spend a few nights in Havana.
Old Havana is beautiful. It was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site back in 1982 and a lot of careful restoration has taken place since then. Most of the old town is inaccessible by car so a walking tour is the only way to see it all. We'd definitely recommend a guided tour so that you don't miss out on any of the detail. And make sure your phone/camera is fully charged, if you're anything like me you'll be taking photographs incessantly!
Cuba is a big island and you may want to consider travelling as part of a small group tour in order to make the most of your visit. Vinales and the west has beautiful countryside and is home to most of the island's tobacco plantations. It's possible to tour some of these on horseback (or mountain bike). The Zapata Peninsula, due South of Havana, has stunning coastal scenery and is home to a nature and wildlife reserve. If you are a modern history fan, you might like to think about taking a side trip to the Bay of Pigs (great snorkelling here!). Further south are the faded glories of Santiago and the simply stunning beaches of Baracoa (not far from Guantanamo).
