We are big fans of Georgia. Here are some of our favourite things about the peach state:
Packed with history, culture, fine dining and coca cola, we love Atlanta;
- we love the Margaret Mitchell house on Peachtree where the costumed guides give you the lowdown on the Gone With The Wind author
- we love the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park, where Dr King is celebrated and the history of the Civil Rights movement is shared
- we love World of Coca‑Cola, so much more that ‘just’ a visitor centre; plan on spending at least half a day here
- and we love the Southern hospitality and charm that still surrounds this beautiful city.
A couple of hours drive from Atlanta, Savannah is a true Southern Belle, Savannah is bursting with Southern charm and architecture. If you’re a movie fan you’ll likely spot a few familiar locations. The bench right by xxx square for instance, is Forest Gump’s bench!
Top tip – Savannah hosts the USA’s (and possibly the world’s?) 2nd largest St Patrick’s Day parade, after New York! Great time to visit if you want to celebrate St Paddys (and go time to avoid if you want to avoid party crowds!).
Savannah is great year round destination, there are nearby beaches to enjoy in the summer months and the town hosts a sparkling Christmas market in December.
With 112 miles of coastline, Georgia has some beautiful beaches. Tybee and Jeckle Island are both beautiful places to visit, and accessible from Savannah. As well as all the usual beach fun, there are great cycle routes on both islands, wonderful restaurants featuring locally caught seafood and opportunities to hike, trek and do a bit of wildlife spotting.
Georgia is home to more than 60 state parks and historic sites, ranging from blackwater swamps in the south to the rugged Appalachian peaks and ancient Native American cities in the North of the State. There’s a hiking, cycling or horseback adventure for everyone in Georgia.
And we haven't even mentioned the golf, Georgia is afterall home to Augusta! And then there's the FIFA World Cup in 2026, with Atlanta announced as a Host City. Get your accommodation booked now if you intend to visit before, during or immediately after the tournament!
Central Florida is one of the most popular destinations for UK holiday makers – and no wonder! Kissimmee with Discovery Cove, Disney and Universal is a heap of fun. Look beyond the theme parks, however, and there’s a whole world of other attractions to Florida.
Central West Florida offers the big-city lures of Tampa, Clearwater, and St. Petersburg, but is also home to magnificent beaches, wildlife, clear springs, and scenic rivers. Busch Gardens amusement park at Tampa rivals Kissimmee for adrenalin thrills, whilst the beaches along this Gulf coast are dazzling with white sand and a relaxed vibe. And if you are an art lover, don’t miss the the Salvador Dalí Museum which houses the largest collection of Dali’s work outside of Spain.
The Southern tip of Florida opens up a whole new world. We love Fort Lauderdale, it’s a relaxed town, built around a network of canals. Fort Lauderdale is on the edge of the Everglades, so ideally placed to take an airboat trip out on the everglades and see the Alligators in their natural habitat. After that, if you’re looking for some retail therapy then look no further than Sawgrassmills (maybe bring an empty suitcase with you!).
Also in Southern Florida is Miami, great destination for a city-break en route to the Keys (or the Caribbean). Don’t miss South Beach – the perfect spot to enjoy a drink or two and people watch - you’re spoilt for choice for award winning restaurants and happening bars and clubs on South Beach.
To round off a trip to Southern Florida, hire a convertible and head down to the Keys. Driving the Florida Keys Overseas Highway is an experience in itself. And the Keys are simply charming. Stop and soak up the atmosphere. If you are a movie and/or Hemingway fan, you’ll love Key West and Key Largo. The Keys is also a perfect destination for a spot of deep sea fishing, snorkeling, sailing or simply chilling!
The scenery, the food, the music, the balmy weather – what can we say?! Louisiana is an assault on the senses in the best possible way! This is a vibrant, warm, welcoming State, with so much on offer for holiday makers.
Louisiana is a melting pot; Native Americans, Spanish, French, Africans, Acadians, Irish, Haitians and many more have left their mark on The Pelican State. This is reflected in the music, food and culture. Jazz, blues, rock, rap – Louisiana has it all; be sure to pack your dancing shoes! For foodies, Louisiana is a treat with world class restaurants alongside Cajun and Creole flavours to tantalise your tastebuds.
New Orleans is, of course, Carnival town. If you want to experience the famous New Orleans Mardi Gras plan to visit early in the year. The streets come alive at this special time of year with music, art, and costumed revellers. Whilst the main event is Fat Tuesday, the Carnival itself starts on Jan 6th and goes through to Ash Wednesday. On the weekends leading up to Fat Tuesday, parades roll all over town.
Future Mardi Gras dates: 13th February 2024, 4th March 2025
Top Tip - when you are in New Orleans book a table at award winning Jewel of The South; named one of the best restaurants/bars in the US 2022.
Aside from New Orleans, Louisiana has much to offer. With 19 official scenic byways and trails, Louisana is an ideal State to explore on a fly drive holiday. Perhaps spending a few days in New Orleans and then taking to the highway. The Louisiana great outdoors has opportunities to bike, paddle, hike and ride through Deep South scenery. Take an afternoon to enjoy some wine tasting, visit one of the historic plantation houses, tour a alligator sanctuary or simply laze on one of the stunning Gulf of Mexico beaches.
Louisiana has it all!
